From PageRank 0 to PageRank 3 In Less Than A Month
Posted on 30. Sep, 2008 by Julius.
I’ve recently looked at how my web site was doing and I noticed something. My web site jumped from PageRank 0 to PageRank 3 in less than a month. I really wasn’t sure why but then I remembered what I did over the last few weeks.
My Backlink Campaign
In my article Are Blog Directories Really Worth It? Robert Kearse posted a comment which made me start my backlink campaign. He wrote:
The backlinks from blog directories should be combined with the backlinks from the articles submitted to article directories (on topics closely related to your blog’s most important keywords).
A properly developed backlink program will deliver far more targeted traffic to your blog due to its impact on the search engines than due to the actual directory links themselves.
I maintain a list of The Top 101 Blog Directories & RSS Submission Sites on my blog at:
Try to submit to 3-5 directories PER DAY.
Best of success,
Robert A. Kearse
Initially I did not believe that it would work since I was just going to submit to blog directories, no article directories. I used Robert’s web site to get a list of blog directories and submitted to around 5 every other day. In the end I signed up for around 20 blog directories.
Commenting on other blogs
As another measure to increase my backlink structure I commented on well known blogs. These were highly popular and established blogs such as ProBlogger, John Chow and ShoeMoney. I only commented on at most 2 articles per blog. It is better to take your time, read the articles and then post a thoughtful comment instead of just posting as many comments as possible.
Wait For A PageRank Update
Afterwards I just waited and while commenting a few times on other blogs. Then after a few weeks my blog had PageRank 3.
I am still not sure which of the two techniques actually had a greater impact on my PageRank but if I had to guess I would say it was the commenting.
–UPDATE–: I have to correct myself here. I guess the most impact came from the blog directories since comments on well known blogs usually provide a link back to your site but this link has the attribute “nofollow” added to it meaning that it won’t add to your link popularity.
Also one more thing to note is that I am now getting a lot more traffic from search engines especially Google, just as Robert said.

I think the reverse happens when Google realises there’s no value from the sites linking to you. I’ve always doubted how much PR juice you can get from directories which list thousands of sites…the value can’t be compared to a site which only has a few outbound links.
