Is Advertising That Expensive?

Recently I’ve been looking at advertising with Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing. Since I got a $50 credit from my host for Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing I thought of signing up for both. My goal was to use up the $50 and don’t spend any of my own money. The first problem I encountered was that you had to pay at least a certain amount of money per month for advertising otherwise you wouldn’t be able to sign up (this is what happened when I tried to sign up with Google Adwords). Thinking that Yahoo might do a better job I tried to enroll into their program.

As I proceeded with my registration I noted the pretty high prices charged for placing advertisement. $10 for approximately 7 visitors seems a lot to me especially if you don’t know whether the traffic is highly targeted. It’s about $1.4 per visitor. As with Google Adwords you have to spend some money each month with Yahoo Search Marketing just to be able to sign up. In the end I didn’t sign up for any advertising network.
What I learned from this
- Do not sign up for a hosting plan just because of their special offers (like the $50 credit for Google Adwords). There is always a catch to it
- Advertising is not worth the money when trying to get more visitors for your blog (at least with Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing)
- Rely on more genuine ways to build traffic
