I use the site version for bulk image compression and I have the Wordpress plugin installed to make life that bit easier. Gimp is great, Photoshop is my first choice but like you said, it comes with a price tag (I got my first ever Photoshop when I was a student a few years back now, so I received a nice discount - now it does not cost as much to upgrade on each new release).
