How to Value A Blog

Posted on 12. Mar, 2009 by Julius.

I’ve recently used forums a lot and one of the guys in the forum asked about how to value a blog. Because of this I thought it would be interesting to see what factors people use to calculate the value of a web site.

First of all the most important aspect of a blog is its community. Therefore the number of comments and the type of comments tell you a lot about the value of a blog.

Comments tell you something about a blog’s audience and how active this audience is. In general I would differentiate between two types of comments:

  1. Short Low Quality Comments: Here usually people write something like “Nice blog. Keep up the great work.” These comments are nice but they do not show a certain type of engagement as other comments do.
  2. Long Quality Comments: These types of comments are found on very few blogs. Take a look at Copyblogger for example, they receive lots of these long quality comments every day.

The difference between these two types of comments is that the latter one adds value to the conversation while the former only shows the author that he has written a good article.

Then of course there are the typical aspects people rely on when judging a web site:

  • Traffic
  • PageRank
  • Technorati
  • The Age of the Blog
  • Listed in Dmoz
  • Wikipedia References
  • Number of Backlinks
  • Monthly Earnings

You could of course add several other factors to this list, but these are the main ones people use to calculate the value of a blog.

There are also a lot of tools out there that automatically estimate the value of a web site. One of these tools is DNScoop. It looks up several aspects of your web site and then calculates how much your web site is worth.

Ultimately Yaro Starak pointed out that your site is worth as much as someone is willing to give you for it.

What measures do you use to value a blog?

sure the long quality comments depend on the kind of post but they also tell you something about a blog alltogether.
it is somewhat sad that I do not have a lot of time to write articles at the moment but in about 2 weeks I’ll have a lot more time and I’ll also redesign the web site.
Btw. you do not have to be good in technical things, it is alright if you know something about traveling that you can write about ;)

I am planning for a website almost similar as current blog but yes, atleast I can go for technical help whenever I need from professional technical people. My job is to write, technical people job is to correct technical problems. And yes, I want website to grow and earn that much amount for me to continue writing.
Blog is not helpful in terms of finance and techncial help. I am not happy with blog technical part and finance and I have to quit very soon.

Why will you have to quit? Just because you are not making money out of it? But your blog is not costing you anything, is it?

True. It is costing ZERO but efforts without any income is OK ? I doubt.
I should get atleast few amount to continue writing for readers. And I want my efforts to shift to own website.
The current blog ranking, pagerank is good but income almost ZERO. Travling requires money not rankings.
Better is if I put that much effort in my own website and get good rankings similar as blog may be I will get promoters, advertisers. Dont you think so.
    Please guide.
