How to Build Backlinks the Smart Way

Posted on 03. Sep, 2010 by .

Many people use link building to improve their search engine rankings because that’s what search engines look at. They look at how many links you have pointing to your website to decide whether your website is an authority website.

In this article I want to show you a different method through which you can increase your traffic and build backlinks at the same time.

I have personally used many strategies to build links to sites but I never liked using most of them. Even though some of them worked they required a lot of work and it also didn’t feel natural using these methods. Recently I read a link building strategy method that Kathy mention on her blog. The whole strategy revolves around one WordPress plugin: KeywordLuv.

How Does KeywordLuv Work?

This plugin basically let’s you optimize your comment for SEO purposes. That means that if you comment on a blog that instead of only using your name you can add an @ and include your keywords behind it. Remember that this strategy only works on dofollow blogs. There is no point in using this strategy on nofollow blogs as you will not get a link back to your website.

Enter your name and add an @ and behind that your keywords

With this in mind you search for a page you want to promote on your blog. A page which you think could rank well in search engines with some backlinks. You can of course also choose your homepage. It doesn’t really matter.

Let’s say your blog is about Internet marketing and you want to target that specific keyword. You would then create comments with the name as follows: Your Name @ Internet Marketing Blog. Then you add the URL. If you want to promote a subpage then do so just copy and paste the URL of the subpage.

The Best Way to Comment Fast

There is one simply problem with this strategy, it can be time consuming. Typing all of these things in the comment forms can be tedious especially if you comment on a lot of websites. That’s why I use a Firefox plugin which automatically does that for me. It’s called easyComment. Once you install it in Firefox all you really need to do is to enter your information in it, such as URL, name, email address and you can even post a comment. Once you have set that up whenever you visit a blog just simply click on the easyComment button and it will automatically insert all of that into the comment form.

In order to find out whether a blog is a dofollow or nofollow blog you can install the NoDoFollow plugin. I personally use the SEO for Firefox plugin which also highlights your nofollow links. The problem with both plugins is also that they can only highlight whether it’s nofollow or dofollow if there are already comments on the page itself. So that’s definitely something you should keep in mind.

If you really want to only post comments on dofollow blogs then use the plugins above. I simply comment on every blog I come across because it takes so much more time for me to find out whether it’s dofollow or nofollow that it doesn’t make sense to me.

Finding KeywordLuv Enabled Blogs

After setting up this plugin you then need to go and find WordPress blogs that use the KeywordLuv plugin. Everyone knows Google and thus it’s the place we turn to in order to find our blogs. I’ve tried several methods to find blogs that have KeywordLuv installed and I will just tell you about the strategy that worked best for me.

To find our blogs with KeywordLuv enabled we will simply go over to Google’s Blog Search. There you simply enter “YourName@YourKeywords” Your Niche and then hit search. Now there will be a lot of pages popping up and some will be more relevant then others. Sometimes there will also be false-negative blogs which don’t have KeywordLuv enabled but not often.

Click on the single blogs listed there. Once you arrive on the page go ahead and comment on it. Click on the easyComment button in the bottom of the browser in order for the plugin to fill in all of your comment information. It will also automatically jump to the comment section.

Kathy also mentioned that you can use SEO Quake to then sort websites in Google according to their PR. I have tried it but it didn’t work for me (I probably did something wrong).

Set Aside Time to Build Backlinks

In order to effectively build these links set aside some time every day and comment on KeywordLuv enabled blogs. The reason why I like the strategy so much is because it works so well and it also incorporates what I do anyway. I go to visit blogs and comment on them the whole time so being able to build backlinks through them is a great plus.

Now if you keep on doing this for several weeks then you will definitely come across a lot of blogs. I simply bookmark each blog I like and add it to my KeywordLuv folder. That way when I want to build targeted backlinks again, all I have to do is go to all of my bookmarked pages.

If you don’t like to bookmark websites you can also go ahead and create a spreadsheet.

My Link Building Experience

I have now used this technique maybe for around 3-4 days. And I must say that I am extremely happy with the results I’ve seen so far.

Before using this strategy I took a screen shot of the page to which I wanted to build some additional backlinks. Down below you can see the results.

Within a few days I have been able to go from 54 backlinks to 73. And in that time I didn’t even use the technique too actively. I just checked the backlinks again and they were at around 140.

I think my search engine traffic for the targeted page has gone up. And also of course I have seen lots of people visiting my site because of me leaving comments on their blogs.

There are of course other alternatives for building backlinks such as software that automatically builds backlinks to your site. Try out this link building strategy and afterwards share your experience with me.

What do you think? Did you know about this strategy already?

I didn’t know about easyComment, I’ll explore it. For those tasks I use memokeys but I need a little more work.

I don’t pay much attention of the dofollow or not, because I comment if I like the article independently if it is dofollow.
But after reading your excellent article I’ll need to adapt to a more refined link building strategy ;-)

    Have a great week,

      Hey Gera,

thanks for stopping by. I hope easyComment works for you. I use it all the time, I think it saves me a lot of time. Memokeys? What’s that?

Yeah I agree with you here. I just mentioned that since it’s a backlink building strategy there would be no point of commenting on a nofollow blog. I still comment on a lot of nofollow blogs anyway. I am glad you liked it Gera. The great thing about this strategy is that you can comment and build links at the same time.

I’ll pay more attention to the do-follow ones ;).

Installed easyComment, created a profile, filled all the fields, saved but when I press Crtl+E nothing…don’t know why.

Memokeys is a little program that allows you to remember everything you want with a combo of keys, very useful. It is valid for all browsers and for writing-documents.

        All the best,

        Gera

          Glad you do ;)
I have to be honest I tried using the Ctrl + E button too but nothing happened. But this was on my old laptop. I don’t know why it didn’t work. But now I tried it again and it worked perfectly. I use a Mac and I use Command + E and it automatically inserts all my comment data into the form. If it still doesn’t then you can always right click on easyComment go to Advanced -> Options. There you can set the keyboard shortcut. I hoped this helps, be sure to tell me whether it works or not.

Memokeys sounds cool although it probably isn’t as simple to install and use, is it?!

          Thanks Gera :)

About Memokeys now I’ve put a link in my url where I mention this application, few examples and link to download. I use it a lot. Isn’t a new program but can be helpful

I am not sure to be honest :P Well part of my strategy was also to just comment on hundreds of blogs (and obviously it did work). There is no better way to get exposure then to simply go out and expose yourself to other people. Try the strategy and tell me what you think. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

  4. I have found though relatively new to blogging that by having commentluv an keywordluv on my blog I definitely am getting more comments. Also I love visiting other blogs and commenting too as it is building up relationships with others in the blogging community.
It definitely is worth taking the time to find blogs with those plugins as when you are getting started it sure helps when other bloggers regularly visit your site. Informative post for those who aren’t part of this community yet.

      Hey Patricia,

yeah these plugins definitely help you to get more comments. The sad thing is though that they sometimes also draw more spam comments to your blog. And you are definitely right. In the end blogging is just about building relationships. That’s the most important thing. That’s the key you should focus on.

Thanks man. Yeah I have installed CommentLuv on this blog too. I think it’s good that blogs do it. The thing you need to keep in mind is that you shouldn’t exploit it though. I mean they don’t need to give you a link back to your site. So you just need to be sure to post great comments on them.

Even though I haven’t tried any commenting strategy like this, but I use a Chrome extension to highlight no-follow links. I also prefer blogs with KeywordLuv or CommentLuv plugins. And I try to comment a lot on related blogs, which apart from the backlink, can also send me some traffic.
By the way, you are following a nice strategy. Keep it up.

What I actually do is that I just visit blogs and comment on them. If they have KeywordLuv enabled then I just use my other EasyComment profile.

    Hey Julius,

I found myself sometimes doing the method like what you have described here. However, if you leave the link to a page that is not a home page, that comment may end up in spam queue and I will take a long time for the owner approve our comments. What do you think?

      Hey Mike,

I totally agree with you here. The chances of your comment ending up in the spam folder is higher if you use KeywordLuv to build targeted backlinks. I’ve also accidentally deleted some comments just because they ended in the spam folder. So yeah that’s definitely a drawback. Thanks for mentioning it :)

  13. I think even the nofollow counts: i read that the difference is thtat in dofollow you get the link and some PR, with nofollow you get the link but not the PR. So eben the nofollow counts on something.

I haven’t been aware of easyComment. Thanks for sharing these wonderful ideas. These are very helpful especially for newbie bloggers. Commenting on other blogs can be time consuming, but it also helps on getting more traffic to your site this way. Even if you don’t get to do much of it in the long run, chances are that there will be still many visitors going to your site as long as your article content has value.

The only problem is that you need to somehow keep track of all the websites you want to comment on. I always forget some blogs on which I wanted to comment on. Thank you for the comment.

Er… what are you referring to here? Maybe some clarification is in order. Comments are indeed about relationships, and I’m not seeing how you can “automatically” build relationships.

I won’t go on with my rant against the whole DoFollow obsession, because I don’t think it would go over well. :)

Hey ChickenFreak, thank you for the comment. There is software available to buy (or sometimes for free) that will help you to build backlinks to your website. Backlinks are just links to your website from another website. The reason why you need these is because it will help you with ranking for certain keywords in search engines.

The software I mentioned doesn’t refer to commenting. It refers mostly to article marketing.

You have to differentiate here. If you are building backlinks you are not automatically building up a relationship (at least that’s the case most of the time). But to be honest that’s the great thing about the strategy I mention above. It helps to build backlinks while creating a relationship with a fellow blogger. I hope this helps you understand what I wanted to say.
And yes I don’t think that you should obsess too much about Dofollow and a like but the reason I mention it here is because mainly my post was about building backlinks to a website. I don’t care whether it’s a nofollow or dofollow blog. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.
