My Blog Report – September 2010

Posted on 01. Oct, 2010 by .

I decided that I will do a monthly blogging report on my blog. I think it will freshen things up and will help you see what’s going on with my blog.

This month has been a good month and one of the first months in which I indeed made money online. The reason why I think this is the case is that it always takes time to build up your skills and create successful websites. So let’s dive right in and see what happened this month.

And Break Overview

In terms of traffic this month has been down from the last one. I guess that is due to my lack of writing for other blogs, such as Famous Bloggers, or because I didn’t get to comment as often, and on as many blogs, as I used to. I hope it will get better next month though since I will certainly have a much more normal day to day life.

The traffic is not down too much and you can see the reason that the traffic decreased, is because fewer new people visited the blog this month. That does support my theory that I didn’t promote my blog as much and thus was not able to draw lots of new people in.

Subscribers

  • September: 97 (+44%)
  • August: 67

As you can see the number of subscribers has increased by around 44% which I think is pretty good if you consider that I actually got less traffic in the meantime.

September Income

  • Google Adsense
    • $0.87
  • Affiliate Earnings
    • Amazon (US and Germany): $10.56
    • Copy Writing Scorecard: $11.99
  • Total: $23.42

It is actually exciting to see that I am starting to make money. I made a little bit of money last month but I only really started to make money this month. I have only made $23.42 which is not really impressive, but still not bad considering that I’ve made no money the months before.

As you can see from above I made some money through Adsense. This was only through 1 click and came from my public speaking mini site. So if I got more visitors to the mini site it could become a main source of income. The mini site is actually doing a lot better now and I think I need to attribute that to my better knowledge of SEO.

The money I made through Amazon came through my other mini sites. They are centered around hard drives and other physical objects. I did indeed manage to sell a few things that way. The interesting aspect of Amazon is to see how many people buy something completely different than the product you were initially promoting. Because of that I will try to build further upon and get more people to these sites.

YouTube Videos

I always wanted to be able to create videos and upload them to Youtube. The only problem was that I didn’t have the software to do it. This month I decided to buy iShowU HD Pro which I believe is a great piece of software. It simply enables you to make videos and to record your voice while talking. If someone of you is using a Mac then I would recommend you try it out. I think there is a demo available for download.

Hacking Attempts

In this month alone I had two hacking attempts to my blog and I am actually glad that I got to know about them. I installed a plugin called WordPress Firewall a few months ago. All it does is to block certain requests and to warn you about potential attacks.
Whenever you get attacked it will automatically notify you via email which I find extremely useful. And that’s the reason why I got over at least 30 mails from this plugin (as you can see in the picture above). The problem with this plugin is that it also usually stops you from making any changes to your blog. This happened to me when I tried to change some code in my theme. Right after that it send me an email showing me what I tried to change. I actually hated it for doing that but then again it’s always good to see that a plugin is actually working. The one way you can get around this is to just disable the plugin when you are making some important changes.

Future Changes

I am currently thinking of making my blog more like Income Diary. I like Michael’s blog and I think he is doing a great job. I certainly don’t want to copy him but I do know that I want to get rid of my banner section here.

I went back and forth with putting banners on this blog. When I started out I clustered this place with banners. But then I decided to remove them. After a while I then again added them. The reason why I think it’s good to remove them (at least for my blog) is that they really don’t add any value to my blog. Instead I could include a little biography of myself or share some important content.
So what do you think? Should I remove the banners? Should I go in the direction of Income Diary?

    Hi Julius

Thanks for the transparency…it’s good to see what works and what doesn’t work.. It’s awesome you made some decent bucks last month too. I’m sure you will kill it this month. I think the banners work well on your blog – clean and crisp and not a distraction at all.

      Hey Michael,

thanks man. Yeah I am glad I made some money too ;) Have you been able to make some money? So you don’t mind the banners? What do you think about adding a bio box to the sidebar? I think I will do that soon because it makes my blog more personal.

Sorry Julius, I just noticed this. I’ve made enough for 3 coffees so far haha!

Yeah, a bio in the sidebar would work.

Look forward to seeing you what you come up with.

      Hey Mike,

always glad to :) My blog is over two years old. So I guess it’s pretty old isn’t it?! How old is yours? It took me a long time to figure out how to start and make things work but I guess it’s getting better each day.

Congrats Julius, you have skills and you have made a good amount of money from website project that not many bloggers out there could. I need to learn from you and thanks for firewall plugin, it can help me to foresee any DDos attacks that I have got last month :-)

      Hey Tinh,

thank you, your skills are far more impressive though. Well I got the client through a friend and she needed a website and so they asked me whether I could do it. And I guess I did.

Yeah the Firewall plugin is extremely useful. Just be careful when editing your theme because you need to disable it before you do so.

Great to see you using your skills to get another blogger on their way. You techies are geniuses in my book…..here speaks a technophobe lol
Your ads aren’t distracting in any way but I think when we put up a bio that adds interest to our site and people can relate to us a bit more.

      Hey Patricia,

I understand what you are saying. It’s sometimes hard to do these things when you haven’t grown up and using them. I am still young and I have started to use computers very early on.
I agree with you I think a bio would make the blog more personal and more interesting. I will definitely put one up there.

Anyway if you ever need help (especially concerning “techie stuff” :P ) just write me :)

Thanks for that Julius. I have met such nice people in the blogging community who really are so encouraging. I would like to give something back and hopefully by visiting other blogs commenting and hopefully adding to the conversation.

          Hey Patricia,

Yeah I have had the same experience. I have always met so many nice people who can really help you with getting further ahead. That’s why I hope I will be able to help some people too.
There are always ways to give back something. Ultimately it’s about doing something without expecting something in return. And it doesn’t really matter what it is :) I am glad you are such an active reader :) Thank you for being there ;)

      Hey Peter,

I agree you definitely need to secure your blog. And WordPress Firewall does a good job doing that, actually it does its job too well because it usually also blocks you from changing anything.
You should definitely try things other than Adsense. Of course it totally depends on your niche (e.g. the public speaking niche seems to pay well so using Adsense there is not a waste of time). After all it’s all about trying things out.

yeah the WordPress Firewall is a great plugin, that’s why I thought of mentioning it. I actually didn’t know that there were so many hacking attempts going on but after I installed it, it actually picked up several ones. I am glad it’s useful to you. Be sure to pass it on to your readers :)

I’ve lost count on the number of blogs I’ve read with their monthly september report haha. But it’s great to share this with your readers :)

I think everyone will be starting to compare each other’s stats and see where they stand… Hmm I need to work on my stats too.

      Hey Bryan,

yeah there are so many people doing monthly reports. Maybe I should do something else. I find it important to always do something that few people are doing. If everyone is doing monthly reports then go in the opposite direction. Do something completely different. I just have to figure out what.

I’m glad to see that you made some money on something that your blog points to. I think that’s a great strategy, I am following that strategy with my blog. I know it’s possible, if your blog is extremely popular, to make money with advertising, but until then, your core product or service is the focal point.

      Hey Lou,

If you want to make money then don’t try to make money in the first place. Try to offer genuine information and don’t ask for something in return. Of course you can always include an affiliate link if you want to and that’s how it mostly works for me. Offer quality information and readers will find a way to pay you back.

Well congrats for your earnings. It is always nice to see that our efforts are paying off regardless of the amount. I think that this gives us the motivation to further deep in to it and work harder. Keep it up and thanks for the WP Firewall plugin. Been thinking of using it and have not quite decided as yet. Good thing it works despite that “alert” that comes from the admin too :)

      Hey DiTesco,

thank you, I am glad that I was actually able to pull something off. I hope I will be able to steadily increase them over time. I totally agree with you here. It’s important to see something happen and it is, that’s what keeps me motivated. Try out the Firewall plugin, it is useful to me but remember whenever you change something in your theme files that you need to disable it. Thanks for stopping by.

It certainly is exciting when you see your income starting to rise. Sadly I did something stupid and want and fell in love, so my income tumbled a lot over the past month. :P

Not bad income considering the amount of traffic you’re getting. Ever thought about offering services on your blog to pick up clients?
